The PAX '09 Yiff-YiPhalla

Postby Butler » 10 Jul 2009, 22:21

PAX '09 is here at last! Time to get giddy like a rich white kid at Christmas as the Washington State Convention and Trade Centre opens its doors to thousands of vitamin D deficient neckbeards, about a hundred enigmatic cosplayers, and of course, your smugly superior fellow forumers.

But… what is that smell, lingering in the air like an awkward silence in this disused corner of the Serpent Theatre? It’s like a mixture of synthetic fibres and semen. A cold bucket of dread pours over you as the rising chant of “Yiff! Yiff! Yiff!” fills the air. You try to escape, but they already have you surrounded. A motley crew of foxes, wolves, bears - and one guy dressed as Goku who doesn’t get how this works – fur-pile on top of you with cacophanous grunts and squeaks. They don’t quite suffocate you, but soon you stop breathing of your own volition anyway.

There have always been furries at PAX, but never in such numbers. This fate, or one very much like it, awaits you and your fellow (comparative) normals if you can’t work together to put a stop to them. But in the light of day, dressed in shorts and humorous t-shirts like everyone else, who can tell friend from foe, freak from fellow… furry from forumer?

The Factions

Forumers
Normal folk: Well, relatively normal, I mean drag-king Liberace impersonators look normal next to furries. Your only weapons are your wits and your ability to start a bandwagon of hate against anyone you suspect of being a closet Starfox fetishist.

Internet Strongman/lady: When you’re not on the internet, you’re at the gym, sculpting the perfect physique which you never get to show off in public because you’re always on the internet or at the gym. You’re not going to let these fursuiters take you or your friends down without a fight. Pick one person to protect each night and they will be guaranteed safe passage until the morning. If you are attacked whilst protecting yourself, you will die but take one of your assailants down with you.

The Refurmee: You’ve burned your marmoset costume, joined a jogging club and made an entirely new group of friends, though you did spend just a bit too long staring at that cardboard cutout outside the booth for the new Sly Cooper game. You’re still pretty good at sniffing out whether or not someone is in the furry fold (or pouch, if you will). Each day you get to identify the alignment of one other player of your choice (ask via PM).

Furries
Frequently mocked for their proclivity for sexualising and dressing up like anthropomorphic cartoon animals, furries are the rest of the internet’s joke-butt du jour. You might have felt a twinge of pity for them if they hadn’t coined the word “fursecution”. Oh, and now they’ve started killing people.

The Rules

Everyone, Forumer and Furry, votes each night in this thread for someone to be lynched, burned, launched into space etc.
Voting is conducted via the poll at the top of the thread. These polls have reversible voting – if you change your mind about someone, you can select a different option. However, you must still make at least one accusation per day in the form of a post in the thread – whether or not the person you vote for and the person you accuse are one and the same is up to you. Accuse like this !Name, unaccuse like this !Name. Furries vote the same way, but in a private forum that only they can view.

Those with special abilities (Refurmee and Internet Strongperson) can have their wishes fulfilled by PMing me before the deadline, each night.

The game is divided into days, so voting and PMs should be in each night, before the deadline (TBA). After the results are announced, a new day starts and the circle of life begins anew.

The role PMs are not to be shared in this thread or over PMs, under punishment of instant disqualification. Once you are killed, you are out of the game and cannot post in the threads or participate in any way.

Victory conditions
For the forumers, it is the elimination of all the furries. For the furries it is to have the same number of players as the forumers.

So all the furries are going to be networked from the beginning (as opposed to just the furry leaders)? I suppose that makes sense given that with only 20 people, the bad guys will need all the help they can get.

The reversible voting poll is a great feature. Sure beats the hell out of reading through 30 pages of thread tallying up votes by the end of the day.

And a general question about this and future games, if a mod would like to join any game in which separate forums are being used, is there anyway one can turn off which forums he/she sees? While I think we can all be trusted not to go into the forum, we could still see the most recent poster in the forum on the board index.

Frobino: Separate days, or do you think that will that be a problem for people?

Chairman: Yes, I was quite pleased when I discovered the option to make voting reversible. Also, since the polls are anonymous even to me it gives people the option of accusing one person and voting for another.

Furries get their own forum from day one, they don't really have a "leader" though. I'm going to be experimenting with the extra forums and permissions settings today, but it should be possible to remove mod permissions for a given sub-forum and just make it "hidden" like the mod forum is for everyone else.

Also, it may interest you to know I've based the structure for this phalla off Elki's pedoPhalla. The only real difference is that the Vigilante (Ugly Child) has been replaced by a Protector (Internet Strongperson).

Man, just reading that all the way through, even the mods grudge vote on the first day.

EDIT: Also also also could everyone keen on this idea please promote it in your sig over at PA?

Okay, here's how it works:

  • I've made a new forum, The PAX '09 Yiff YiPhalla Forum. (It's locked at the moment, I'll unlock it when the game is ready to begin.) This is where the game will take place.
  • I've also made two new groups, Forumers and Furries.
  • Furries are a hidden group. That means people who aren't members can't see who's in the group, but people who are in the group can see who other members are.
  • Everyone can view the Yiff YiPhalla Forum, but only members of the Forumer and Furry groups can post in there.
  • I've also made a new sub-forum just for Furries. Only they (and myself as admin) can see it and post in it. They will use this forum to vote for who they want to kill via daily reversible polls, same as in the general phalla forum.

i don't think it's necessarily a problem to have them be separate days, but i've seen games in which the weekend was one big day. my question was more of a clarification request than a vote one way or the other.

still, in a game like phalla where 'days' are a concept not necessarily tied to actual time, it may not be a bad idea to put forth a poll (formal or informal) just to gauge where public sentiment lies.

Hmm, I'll consider doing that frobino, but I'll wait until there's a few more people here first. Soon I should have the go-ahead to make a thread about this phalla in SE++, so fingers crossed!

I'd like to play. Of course, the closest I've gotten to Phalla is having read through the pedophalla thread. But still, why not?

I've got some questions about this forum though:

1) Is there a chat type thread where I can post questions like this?
2) Why a forum? Is it because CF is big and scary? I know everytime I want to get involved over there it does look rather intimidating.
3) I look forward to seeing how long before Frobino goes mad with power this time. Put on your Jake Busey face!

I've gone through my reasons for creating this site over here, but essentially it's to give forum-based games a bit more room to spread out and let the people running them have more control over the experience, with options for reversible-voting polls and exclusive sub-forums among other things.

You can post any genuine questions in the appropriate forum - if you're not sure where it should go, just stick it in Welcome to the Bungle. We don't have a chat thread right now, and I'm ambivalent about starting one. I feel like we already have Social Entropy for chat and off topic stuff, so hosting our own chat would be redundant. I know some of the official forums have chat threads but... I don't really get why they do either! I am open to discussion on this, if someone wants to start a thread over in WttB go right ahead.

Definitely gonna need to spread the word if we want to get this game going. Twenty people would be half our total userbase and three more people than we had online at once during the downtime.

You're right Ringo, but there's already an Augmentos thread in SE++. I asked Bogey for permission to make another one for this phalla in particular but he never replied. I'm actually a lot keener about this place and this phalla than it may seem, I just don't want to get all obnoxious about promoting them over at the official forums and cross the line into sitewhoring. Even if it means a slower start, we should stick with promoting it in our sigs and mentioning it briefly when relevant (as you did in the comics thread, thanks by the way).

Additionally, if anyone has friends who would be into this then please invite them via PM or e-mail.
